The bookmark that I use in my copy of 2666 is the Christmas card that my brother wrote to me when he gave me the book. I'm about 600 pages into Roberto Bolaño's 2666 –a book that is both horrible and hypnotic, one of the few Bolaño works I've been able to finish (Amuleto was the other one). Namely, Bolaño's wish was for 2666 to be published in separate volumes, one per year ( I believe). But I know exactly when I read the first page of Roberto Bolaño's 2666. 2666 is a novel written by Roberto Bolaño and published posthumously in Spanish in 2004. Every book that isn't a masterpiece is cannon fodder, a slogging foot soldier, a piece to be sacrificed, since in multiple ways it mimics the design of the masterpiece. And this is probably why, out of all the 'books' in 2666, I liked Book II best. The best blogging experience of my first year at the practice is, by far, the group read of 2666. The English translation hits stores next Tuesday and the reviews couldn't be better, especially considering the book's 912 pages. Now that I have that distance, no tangible perspective has come other than this: nothing else I've read since has been 2666. Roberto Bolaño's The Savage Detectives took the literary world by storm, and his latest posthumous release, 2666, is five times as long and ten times as ambitious. Unlike our editor, Ligaya Mishan, I have yet to finish “2666” and probably won't before the month's end. No other book has done to me what 2666 did. I have very little patience for books I'm not enjoying and I have no reluctance to put a book down forever if I'm not getting "pleasure"* from it.
